Description:

OUTSTANDING GOLDEN-AGE KENTUCKY RIFLE. This is certainly the finest Kentucky Rifle we have ever offered. It is undoubtedly the work of George Eister, considered by Kindig as one of the great Golden Age Makers. There is an almost identically carved Eister pictured on page 303 of Kindigs masterpiece work, 'Thoughts On The Kentucky Rifle In Its Golden Age'. Eister worked from the Revolutionary War period to about 1802. It can instantly be recognized that the Rococco carving on this piece is of the finest quality. The cheekpiece side is raised carved with spectacular scrolls, cross-hatching and a flower, as is the patchbox side forward the box. The elegant curly maple stock is complete, save for 2 small repairs that are visible with study. They are just silver replacements, about 1.5in long and porx. .25in wide. The lock has been slightly cleaned and appears to be in its original flint, but we cannot guarantee this. The side plate and toe plate have Eisters beautiful c-scroll engraving, and the toe plate the usual compliment of 6 screws. Based on the known characteristics of Eisters patchboxes, we are certain that this half round/half octagon buck and ball rifle was originally made by Eister without a patchbox, as it has none of the known Eister familiarities. The patchbox is probably a 19th century addition that was needed by a former owner. The new owner of this rifle should have it examined by an expert and have recommendations made as to its proper restoration. It is nearly a masterpiece and an excellent addition to any American Arms collection.
