Rubbing Hohokam Petroglyph or Rock Art - This is Rock Art or Petroglyph "Rubbing" of a "Two Tailed' Solstice" It is a spiral in design with two forked tails starting it There are three types of solstices: spring, fall and winter It is believed this one is a spring solstice This spring solstice let these prehistoric people know when to start to plant their spring crop The Hohokam left no written records But these pre-historic people did leave their history in the form of Rock Art or Petroglyphs The Hohokam culture was located in Central Arizona from the Verde Valley south to the Sonoran Desert Theyinhibited an area at one time that encompassed 45,000 square miles Their agrarian culture dates from 300 B.C to 1450 A.D This petroglyph is located at a Hohokam Pueblo ruins on top of a remote mesa The rock art solstice is carved on the north side of a large rock on the cliff side of the pueblo A compass was put on top of the rock directly over the center of the solstice carving and it pointed "true magnetic north" The exact date of the carving is unknown The last picture shownis of the actual solstice petroglyph carving or rock art form The sizeof the entire art rubbing paper is 18.5in x 24in The graphite rubbing measures 12in x 15in The solstice itself measures 9in across The rubbing is done by nana- Lee D Fairchild, Madison, Ohio, dated and with GPS of longitude and latitude of actual location.
